Chat and Stream based UIs are different paradigms for interacting with content. We have made the bold choice to try and support both, and allow groups to choose which one they prefer. Chat is like text message, Slack or WhatsApp is generally preferred for quick back and forths. It also makes it easier to track which was the last post you read and take you to that when you return to the chat room. The Stream is intended to show you all the content across the group in one long stream, like a Facebook Group, and in that paradigm folks are used to content starting at the top. We definitely understand the confusion and we want to make it much more clear when/why to use each paradigm. We are working on the next steps to make this less confusing but are still discussing the exact plan. Here is some of the steps we are working on
- When you create a group let you choose between Stream and Chat as the home UI and describe the differences between them
- Make the Stream and Chat look more different so it's more obvious which one you are in.
- Rename Stream to Activity Stream and include chats across all chat rooms in it so it truly shows you all the content across the group
