More consistent UX

I'm trying out the Hylo app for the first time, and I am not finding it very intuitive to use. The feed for some areas goes from top to bottom, and in other areas it goes the opposite direction.
I get notifications for areas that I can't enter because I'm not a member. Why would I be notified, then?
How can we reply to someone? Can conversations be threaded, or not? How do we add likes, etc.?
The workflow is confusing overall... please have a UX person review this app! I really want to like it, but if I can't figure it out, other people in my group won't be able to either.
